Thing 13 – K12 online conference

Cool concept, but I was a little let down. i actually listened to two different presentations. The first was titled “Using Web 2.0 in the Grade One classroom“. I was intrigued by this because I am a lower grades teachers and hoped to find some new implementation ideas. To say the least this was lackluster. The presenter spoke about blogging basically as a parent newsletter and referenced a few tools like flickr without really telling nay interesting ideas for using it. She did show a bit about wikis that gave me a little bit of an idea, but nothing really groundbreaking.
Since this presentation was only about 8 minutes, i decided to try a different presentation. So I discovered a presentation by a presenter that had created several other presentations. It was entitles “Web 2.0 Share the Adventure“. This one started out very promisingly. I identified with the topic she started with and settled in for some good learning. But about midway through I really felt that most of her instruction was geared for upper grade teachers. I did listen to the whole presentation, but I was just disappointed at the lack of lower grade ideas she offered.
Overall, I feel that the tool of the conference is valuable. I think I will try to use it again in the future in order to try to find something that is valuable to me. I’m sorry that my first experience didn’t live up to my expectations, but I don’t think that reflects on the site – more on my expectations and personality.
